Merlot

Merlot is a dark‑blue grape used both as a blending component and as a varietal wine, noted for its soft, fleshy texture and earlier ripening than Cabernet Sauvignon. It thrives in cool, ferrous clay soils and produces wines with plum flavors, gentle tannins, and low acidity, often showing notes of black cherry, cedar, and herbs. The grape is widely planted, especially in France, Italy, Chile, and New World regions such as Australia and New Zealand, where it is made in styles ranging from light and fruity to rich and tannic.
